We specialize in scent work (also known as nosework) – a training approach that taps into your dog’s natural sniffing instinct to boost their obedience and confidence. Scentwork training is scientifically proven to turn problem behaviors into strengths by giving your dog a job they love. It drastically improves the bond between you and your pup. In short, scent work makes learning fun, rewarding, and effective for dogs of all ages.
What is Scent Work?
Scent work is a popular dog sport and enrichment activity that simulates the task of professional detection dogs – but in a relaxed, casual setting for pet dogs. We teach your dog to recognize and find specific scents hidden in various places and to alert you once they’ve found it. It’s essentially hide-and-seek for your dog’s nose! Dogs have an incredible sense of smell. They have 300 million scent receptors in their Olfactory gland within their nose (compared to about 5–6 million in humans). A large portion of their brain is devoted to analysing smells. This area is 40 times bigger than our own! This means sniffing comes naturally to them, and they love it.
Why do dogs love scent work?
For one, it allows them to do what they do best: use their nose. Scent work is a positive, challenging game that lets your dog explore the world through smell. It mimics their natural hunting and foraging behaviors in a safe, controlled way. Your dog gets to be a “detective,” solving scent puzzles and enjoying plenty of mental stimulation and physical searching. Meanwhile, you’ll see them light up with excitement and focus – and that’s incredibly rewarding for both of you.
Many dogs, like this German Shepherd, love using their nose to find hidden scents. Scent work training can involve searching containers, indoor rooms, or outdoor areas for a target odour, turning a dog’s natural sniffing ability into a fun game.
Because it engages a dog’s primary sense, scent work is often more tiring than a long walk! A short sniffing session can leave your pup happily exhausted in a way that physical exercise alone might not. Best of all, any dog can do scent work – big or small, young or old, active or shy. It’s an inclusive activity that we adapt to your dog’s individual needs and pace.
Benefits of Scent Work Training
Scent work isn’t just about having fun (though it is lots of fun). It also offers numerous benefits for your Dog:
- Mental Stimulation and Enrichment: Sniffing out hidden scents gives your dog a mental workout by tapping into their natural scent-tracking instincts. This kind of challenge keeps their mind active and helps prevent boredom. A tired brain is a happy brain, especially for intelligent or high-energy breeds.
- Fun and Fulfillment: Simply put, dogs love to sniff. Giving them an outlet to do so is immensely rewarding for them. Scent work provides tons of positive enrichment – it’s an adventure that makes life more fulfilling and reduces stress for your dog. And seeing your dog happy and successful will put a smile on your face, too!
- Confidence Building: Successfully finding a scent reward boosts your dog’s confidence. Nervous or shy dogs come out of their shell when they realize they can solve the puzzle. Each time your dog “wins” at the scent game, their self-assurance grows. Trainers often find that sniffing classes help build confidence in shy dogs and even reduce anxiety by providing a positive outlet for nervous energy.
- Improved Focus and Calm: Scent work teaches dogs to concentrate on a task for an extended period. By channeling their energy into sniffing, it naturally encourages calm behavior. This can be especially helpful for hyperactive or easily distracted dogs – it gives that 100-miles-an-hour dog something productive to do! Over time, you may notice better impulse control and less reactive behavior as your dog learns to focus despite distractions.
- Physical Exercise (Low Impact): While it’s not as vigorous as agility or running, scent work does get your dog moving. They will be walking, trotting, climbing, or digging as they search, providing gentle physical exercise. It’s easy on the joints, which makes it ideal for puppies with developing bones or older dogs that need low-impact activity.
- Strengthened Bond with You: Scent work is a team sport – you and your dog work together during training. As your dog learns to trust you for guidance and you learn to read your dog’s body language, your partnership deepens. Working on scent challenges builds communication and trust between handler and dog In other words, it strengthens the relationship you share with your canine companion. Many owners find their dogs are more attentive and connected with them after doing nosework.
Scent Work for Puppies and Senior Dogs
One of the great things about scent work is that it’s suitable for dogs of all ages
We often get asked if it’s okay to do scent training with puppies – and the answer is yes! Scent work for puppies can be especially beneficial for burning off that extra puppy energy in a constructive way. Young dogs generally should be about 5–6 months old (with basic obedience skills and vaccinations in place) to start formal scent classes. For example, many foundation scent classes accept puppies around 24 weeks (6 months) or older.
At this age, puppies are curious and fearless, making it a perfect time to introduce them to nosework games. We keep sessions short and fun to match a puppy’s attention span, and focus on building confidence with easy wins.
Older dogs and even senior dogs can also thrive with nosework. As a low-impact sport, it can be adapted to any physical limitations, even an older dog who can’t go on long hikes can participate and stay sharp. Scent work can give a retired agility dog a new job to love, or help keep a senior dog’s mind engaged. No matter your dog’s age or breed, if they have a nose, they can enjoy scent work!
Our Scentwork Training Classes in Malmesbury
We offer scentwork training classes near Malmesbury. They are designed to take you and your dog from complete beginners to confident sniffing pros. Our classes are structured in small groups so that every dog gets plenty of individual attention and feels comfortable. We start with introductory scent detection exercises – teaching your dog to search for a target odour and indicate when they’ve found it. In the beginner level, dogs typically learn to a find the scent of red kong. At Silver level, we introduce further scent (for example, gun oil or cat nip) for them to locate. As you progress, the searches become more complex – we’ll hide scent in trickier spots, increase the search area, and proof against distractions.
Where do I start?
We currently run UK Sniffer Dogs Bronze-level scent detection courses for beginners. Also, Silver and Gold detection levels for continuing the journey. We follow the trusted UK Sniffer Dogs curriculum.
Each course runs for six weeks (usually a one-hour class each week), giving you time to practice skills between sessions. Classes are held at indoor and outdoor venues near Malmesbury. Very accessible for those in Malmesbury, nearby Wiltshire villages, and even Cirencester and the surrounding Cotswolds. (Our recent classes have been at Didmarton and Great Somerford, just a short drive from Malmesbury.) We keep class sizes small (4–6 dogs) to ensure a calm environment and personalised coaching for each handler-dog team.
After completing a foundation scent work course, you’ll have the option to join our ongoing Progressions Club to continue honing your dog’s nose talents. In these follow-up sessions, we introduce new challenges such as novel scents, exterior and high searches, and longer search times. Many of our clients catch the “scent work bug” and love continuing this activity long-term – some even go on to compete in scent work trials. Whether you want to eventually compete or just have fun, we’ve got a pawsitive path for you.
One to One Training
Not all dogs do well in a group class setting, and that’s okay. If your dog is reactive or easily overwhelmed around other dogs, we also offer one-on-one scent work training at your home. Class times don’t suit you? We can come to your home to work on scent detection in a controlled environment. This way, every dog can enjoy scent work at their own pace. (In fact, scent work is fantastic for reactive dogs because it builds confidence and provides a positive focus for their energy.) Please seek out our details, to discuss one-to-one training options if you feel your dog would benefit from it.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What age does my dog need to be to start scent work?
Most puppies can begin scent work once they have basic manners and are around 6 months old. We recommend puppies be at least about 5–6 months (approximately 24 weeks) old before joining a group class
This ensures they have the attention span and foundation skills to get the most out of it. There’s no upper age limit – dogs can start at any age beyond puppyhood.
Does my dog need any prior training or experience?
Our scent work classes are beginner-friendly and designed for any dog who is curious and food (or toy) motivated. In fact, no previous training is needed to start nosework. No obedience titles or fancy training needed!
We will show you and your dog everything step by step. As long as your dog has basic house manners and you can motivate them with a treat or toy, you’re ready to go.
What should I bring to class?
All you need to bring is your dog (on a longer lead – 3to5m – and harness), two different high-value treats your dog loves, and an eager attitude! (If your Dog is toy motived, we’ll help you there too.) We provide the scent samples and any special equipment. Retractable/flexi leads are not allowed for safety reasons. Bringing both low-value and extra tasty treats is a good idea to reward as dogs do prefer different rewards for different jobs!
We’ll let you know if you need to bring anything else specific, but generally it’s very simple. Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended. You’ll be moving around with your dog during searches.
Where do the classes take place?
Typically in local village hall or outdoor venues around Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. We’ve chosen venues that are quiet and dog-friendly, with both indoor space and some outdoor areas for training. When you book, we’ll give you the exact location and directions. (for example, one of our common spots is Didmarton Village Hall, which is about 15 minutes from Malmesbury.) We may rotate locations occasionally, but all are within a short drive for Malmesbury and Cirencester residents. If you’re coming from elsewhere in Wiltshire or the South Cotswolds, you’ll find our classes easy to reach via the main roads.
Can reactive or shy dogs join scent work classes?
We welcome dogs of varying temperaments and will do our best to accommodate everyone. Scent work can be wonderful for dogs who are shy or reactive because it builds confidence and focus. In our group classes, dogs work one at a time while others wait at a distance, which helps prevent stress. However, if your dog has severe reactivity or would be uncomfortable in a class setting, contact us to discuss. It might be better to start with one-on-one sessions so your dog can learn in a calm environment.
We are happy to advise on the best setup for your dog. Some dogs are suited for a one to one environment, and that’s okay. We can tailor a solution so every dog gets to enjoy nosework safely.
