About Me: A Pawsitive Step Towards Understanding Your Dog

Welcome to A Pawsitive Step, where we take a different approach to dog training - one that’s as unique as your furry friend. My name is Catriona, a multi award winning Dog Trainer and I specialise in creating custom training plans that make both you and your dog feel like rock stars (without the stress, of course).

But here’s the twist: I’m not your typical trainer. In fact, I’m an A-typical trainer - because I’m autistic and believe that my brain works in ways that help me understand dogs (and their humans!) in a way that others might not. Think of it as my hidden “superpower” for cracking the code on dog behaviour

So, what’s my training style?

Well, it’s all about understanding, patience, and using science-based, positive reinforcement methods that make both the human and canine sides of the lead feel calm, comfortable and confident. Read more about this style in the frequently asked questions page

Changing lives, not controlling them.

If you’re feeling  that of hearing that “your dog is running rings around you” spoiler: they’re actually not), you’re in the right place. It’s time to toss out that old school thinking. Your dog’s behavior isn’t about them being a furry little dictator. Nope, that’s just not scientifically accurate anymore.

The truth is, your dog might seem like they’re in charge or not listening because they’re feeling anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed. In my experience, those dogs are the ones desperately trying to communicate with you — they just need the right guidance. And that’s where I come in. Together, we’ll take a step back, understand the real reasons behind those behaviors, and develop an approach that’s going to help both you and your dog feel more relaxed and connected.

I promise, no one’s barking orders here. Instead, we’re building positive partnerships with a little bit of humour and a lot of understanding.

Why Choose Me?

1. Empathy & Expertise: I’ve been where you are—stressed out by frustrating behaviors, unsure where to turn. As someone who has lived with autism, I can understand things differently. This gives me a unique edge in training because I get how dogs—and humans—can feel misunderstood.

2. Scientific, Positive Reinforcement Methods: No outdated, fear-based training techniques here. I use proven, humane methods based on the latest behaviour science. Your dog will learn through trust and positive rewards, not through fear. My main influence  are award winning Dr Tom Mitchell from his Vet Practice Beha.vet and also, when he worked at dog training company training company Absolute Dogs

3. Fun, Light-Hearted Approach: Yes, training can be serious work, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! Think of it like a workout, but for your dog’s brain. Expect fun moments, a few laughs, and plenty of celebrations when your dog finally learns that “sit” actually mean.

A Little Magic Goes a Long Way

I'm not saying I have magical powers, but my autism gives me a unique insight into dog behaviour that might just feel a little like magic. It's a different perspective, one that allows me to tune into your dog's needs in ways that are sometimes hard to explain but easy to feel. Whether it's recognizing that your dog is feeling overwhelmed or realizing that their wild behavior is coming from an unmet need, my ability to look at things from multiple angles is a superpower that helps me bring out the best in both you and your dog.
